Senior Day Sweep

Taking senior day by storm, the Cougars took both games against Adams State University with run rules.

Game 1: 8-0

Game one was off to a good start for the Cougars, as CCU kept Adams scoreless thanks to Kenzie Mattey on the mound and consistency on the field. The Cougar scoring spree began in the bottom of the first, after Kendall Yasui hit a single. She then stole second, but didn't have to wait long before Stephanie Day stepped up and hit a homerun to score the first 2 runs of the game.

The 2nd and 3rd inning saw the Cougars getting right on the brink of scoring, but both innings left two on base.

The scoreless streak was broken in the 5th when Hanna Farmer reached first on an error, then stole second. Kendall Yasui hit a single then stole second as well. Farmer was then brought home from Stephanie Day, giving the Cougs a 3-0 lead. Charlotte Romero then came in and hit a double to bring home Yasui, making the difference 4. Not done scoring yet, Alyssa Hanks hit a single to bring home Romero, making the score 5-0.

The 6th inning started with Amy Edison on first after being hit by the pitch, and was followed by a single from Shelbie Day. The bases were loaded after Hanna Farmer also hit a single. Amy Edison was brought home from a passed ball, making the score 6-0. Stephanie Day stepped up to the plate with runners on 2nd and 3rd, and hit a single to make the score 8-0 which finished the game.
Stephanie Day was the leading hitter in game one, with 3 hits, 1 run, and 5 RBI.

Kenzie Mattey stayed on the mound the entire game, only allowing 3 hits and struck out 7 batters.

Game 2: 10-1

Game two began after a senior ceremony honoring the seven seniors on their last home series. including Alyssa Hanks, Jennie Winston, Amy Edison, Shelbie Day, Letty Valenzuela, Tana Feiner, and Baylee Johnson

Jennifer Romero started on the mound for game two, only allowing one run and striking out four.

The first inning started with Shelbie Day getting on base with a single, then stealing second and third. Stephanie Day was then walked, but caused a distraction while she stole second which helped Shelbie Day steal home to make the score 1-0. Charlotte Romero stepped up with Steph on 2nd, and hit a fly ball that was dropped to put her on first and score Day, making the score 2-0.

Making the first pitch of the second inning count, Letty Valenzuela stepped up and hit a homerun to make the score 3-0, also tying the CCU career homerun record. Shelbie Day then stepped up and reached on an error, but stole 2nd and 3rd. She was then brought home from a sac fly from Hanna Farmer, making the score 4-0.

The third inning started off with Stephanie Day getting walked, but Charlotte Romero followed and hit a homerun to make the score 6-0. Shelby Fusich then came and hit a triple, and was quickly brought home from an Alyssa Hanks single.

Adams State was able to get their first and only run of the day in the top of the fourth. Stephanie Day was again walked to start the inning, and was then advanced to second after Charlotte Romero was hit by the pitch. Shelby Fusich hit a sac bunt to advance the runners, who were then brought home from a homerun from Alyssa Hanks, scoring the final runs to make the score 10-1.

Closing out the 6th, CCU brought in senior pitcher Tana Feiner to finish the game, her first appearance this season due to injury. It was nothing short of emotional when Feiner struck out the first two swinging, and the third grounded out to complete the day with a sweep.

The seniors did not put their day to shame, and took advantage of the beautiful day in Lakewood, Colorado to finish out their home games. The wins give the Cougars a record of in 22-4 in the RMAC, and 33-7 overall. CCU will complete the series with another doubleheader against the Grizzlies on Monday, April 16th with a start time of 11am.
