The Cougs and Grizzlies started off day two with a very close game that ended in a Cougar victory 6-5. It was an exciting seven innings that had a combination of great pitching and big swings. Even though Adams and CCU both hit two home runs in the game, the difference was on the mound. CCU's pitching staff shut down the Grizzles when in counted. ASU left 12 on base--- 3 in the first inning, no runs---2 in the third inning, no runs---3 in the fifth inning, no runs---and 3 more in the seventh inning, one run. CCU's ace
Kenzie Mattey started and ended the game with 10 strikeouts taking her 20
th win this season (20-6).
CCU was first to score in the game, but was quickly overpowered by a three-run home run by Adams center fielder. The Cougs rebutted with a homer of their own by first baseman
Carly Perry, but with some unfortunate fielding errors in the fifth inning, Adams scored again. The score was now 4-2 ASU going into the sixth frame. Adams had a quick three outs in the sixth, and CCU scored three more runs in the bottom half.
Charlotte Romero singled through the right side scoring
Stephanie Day and then
Shelby Fusich homered to center field scoring Romero. Just like that CCU took the lead 5-4 going into the final inning of the game.
But the Grizzles first batter that inning found just the right pitch and hit another home run into center field to tie the game 5-5. The next Grizzly batter singled, then another batter was walked, and then another single by ASU had the bases loaded with two outs. Mattey ended the inning with an easy 1,2,3 strikes to get the batter out swinging. Now it was the Cougars time to find a way to win.
Leading-off the inning was left fielder
Kendall Yasui. Yasui walked, then stole second.
Stephanie Day then flied out to center field allowing Yasui to reach third base. The game was won from a walk-off sac fly by
Shelby Fusich to score Yasui 6-5. Fusich ended the game with 3 RBI and both
Charlotte Romero and
Amy Edison hit 2-3 with one run.
CCU controlled game two as they scored two runs early, five runs in the fifth, while holding the Grizzlies to no runs until the sixth and seventh innings.
The Lady Cougars continued to score from some big hits as
Shelby Fusich and
Hanna Farmer doubled and
Alyssa Hanks homered. One of CCU's main strengths is that they are good with both the long and short ball. The Cougs utilized their bunt game several times this weekend and saw a lot of success with it against Adams State, especially with runners like
Hanna Farmer,
Kendall Yasui, and
Shelbie Day---Christian carries a lot of confidence on the bases.
Freshman pitcher
Jennifer Romero took the win (14-1). Romero pitched 5.1 innings with 5 strikeouts allowing only three hits and two runs.
Sarah Probasco went 1.2 innings allowing two hits and one run.
Standing out on the day was CCU junior
Charlotte Romero who batted .833%, going 5-6. Romero broke the all-time single season record in doubles this weekend as she now has 18 total doubles on the year.
