Cougs Split with #1 in the Nation

CCU's Softball team traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado, to face the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, currently ranked first in the nation.

Game one of the doubleheader began at 12pm on April 21st, which was taken by the Cougars with a final score of 6-3. Game two began shortly after, but this time was taken by the Mavericks with a final score of 10-3.

Game 1
Taking game one was an incredible feat for the Cougars, considering the Mavs are currently ranked #1 in the nation, and had only lost one game before the matchup.

The first inning was off to a strong start when Hanna Farmer tripled, and was brought home by the next batter, Kendall Yasui, with a sac fly. Stephanie Day then hit a single, and was brought home from her teammate right behind her, Alyssa Hanks with a double, giving the Cougars 2 quick runs to start the game.

CMU was not going to let that early lead sit for long however, and got a quick 3 runs after a homer from Brooke Hodgson, who currently holds the #3 spot in the nation for batting average.  However this would be the only scoring play of the game for the Mavericks.

The second inning was quiet for both teams, but CCU came back in the third and scored 3 runs to take the lead. It began with a triple from Kendall Yasui, who was brought home by a sac fly from Charlotte Romero. The next batter, Stephanie Day was walked. Alyssa Hanks then stepped up and hit her 5th homerun of the season, making the score 5-0.

The fourth inning was again a quiet one, but the Cougars notched one more run in the 5th, after a homerun from Charlotte Romero, her 2nd this season.

Taking the win for the Cougars on the mound was Jennifer Romero, giving her a record of 16-1. Sarah Probasco also came in clutch for the Cougars when she came in for the save, striking out the only two batters she faced in the bottom of the 7th to end the game.

Overall the game was one for the books, and one that will not be forgotten after such a great showing from the entire team. Mesa is currently #1 in the nation for batting average with .409, but CCU is not far behind with the 8th spot hitting .359.

Game 2
With a little fuel to the fire after taking their second loss of the season, the Mavericks came out swinging in the first inning, scoring 4 runs right off the bat.

CCU snagged a run in the 2nd inning, after Alyssa Hanks walked, advanced, advanced again on a sac fly, and scored on a wild pitch. The Mavs matched the Cougars 2nd inning with one run, making the score 5-1 going into the third.

The 4th inning started out hopeful after Alyssa Hanks singled, then was brought home by a homer from the CCU career homerun leader, Letty Valenzuela to make the score 5-3. But unfortunately, the Cougars were unable to score again.

CMU held CCU in the 5th, and made it count when they scored five runs to seal their win of 10-3.

The split on the day gives the Cougars an overall record of 37-8, and 27-5 in conference. The dual between CCU and the Mavs continues on April 22nd, with a start time of 11am in Grand Junction, Colorado.
