Softball Forces First Series Split for #1

Forcing the first series split of the season to the #1 team in the nation, CCU Softball came in to day two against the Mavs ready to play. Just like the day before, the Cougars took the first game of the day and lost the last. The Cougs took game 3 with a final score of 8-4, now owning just two of the three losses the Mavs have been dealt this season. However CMU came back in game 4 to take the win in five innings, 12-0.

Game 1: W 8-4
CCU was unable to score until the third inning, which tied up the game at 2-2. It started with a single from Amy Edison, followed by a single from Hanna Farmer to put runners on first and second. Charlotte Romero hit another single to bring home Edison, and send Farmer to third. Stephanie Day hit yet another single to score Farmer and even the scoreboard.

The first batter of the 4th inning was Shelby Fusich, who stepped up hit a homerun to take the first CCU lead of the game, 3-2. Mesa matched the run in the bottom of the 4th, to tie up the game again 3-3.

The Cougs got close to scoring in the fifth after a couple singles from Hanna Farmer and Kendall Yasui, but they were unable to make it home. But CCU held strong in the 5th, facing only three batters and forcing two pop outs and a fly out.

Keeping the momentum from the bottom of the 5th, the Cougs came in to the 6th to make it count. Shelby Fusich was the first batter again, and landed a double. Letty Valenzuela was then walked, and both the runners were advanced after a sac bunt from Amy Edison. Carly Perry reached first after a fielder's choice in efforts to get Fusich out at home, but was unsuccessful as the Cougars got their first run of the inning, taking the lead again 4-3. Hanna Farmer was then walked to load the bases. With almost an identical situation to the scoring play, Yasui reached first on a fielders choice, but this time they got the runner out at home. With bases still loaded, Charlotte Romero hit a single which brought home Farmer and Perry, giving the Cougars a three run lead. Stephanie Day brought home the final run of the inning, after a single up the middle to bring home Yasui, ending the inning with the four run lead, 7-3.

Matching their 5th inning defense, the Cougars forced another quick three outs with a strikeout, ground out, and fly out.

The last run for the Cougars came in the 7th, after Letty Valenzuela was walked. Alex Garlock came into pinch run, and was brought home after a fielding error and then a Hanna Famer single. Mesa scored one more in the bottom of the 7th, but CCU came away with another win against the #1 team in the nation, 8-4.

Jennifer Romero started on the mound for the Cougars and pitched for 3.2 innings, and Kenzie Mattey took the mound in the 4th to pitch 3.1 innings and take the win, her 21st of the season. Four Cougars lead the fight offensively. Hanna Farmer brought in 3 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI, Charlotte Romero had 2 hits and 3 RBI, Stephanie Day had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Shelby Fusich had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 1 RBI.

The win gave hope to win the series, but guaranteed the series split.

Game 2: L 12-0
Making their senior day count, the Mavericks came back in game four and dominated offensively. They only allowed two hits from the Cougars, forcing the shutout.

Facing only three batters a piece in the first inning, it was a quick transition to the second. The second inning the CMU bats were on fire, with 5 hits and 5 runs and facing three members of the CCU pitching squad.

Mesa took advantage of the CCU error in the 3rd, scoring two more runs to make the score 7-0. With a couple doubles in the 4th, the Mavs had 4 hits and 5 runs to go up 12-0. Not wasting any time, they had quick three outs to take the game with a run rule.

The two hits for the Cougs came from Alyssa Hanks and Amy Edison.

The series split gives the Cougars a record of 38-9 overall, and 28-6 in conference. After an incredible weekend of play, the Cougars will gear up for their last weekend of conference. The final games of regular season play will be held at Colorado School of Mines, with doubleheaders scheduled on the 28th at 12pm and 2pm, and on the 29th at 11am and 1pm.
