The Cougar Softball team headed over to Colorado School of Mines for day 2 of their four game series. Coming off of a split the day before, CCU won in a run rule in game 3, and lost in game 4.
Game 3: W 13-1
CCU started off their first couple innings at a moderate pace, but really sealed the win after landing four runs in the 3
rd and 4
th. The three runs in the 5
th inning left some room to seal the run-rule.
The single run in the 1
st came after
Hanna Farmer singled, stole second, and was then advanced to third after a bunt from
Kendall Yasui. While stealing second, Yasui forced an error that scored Farmer.
Colorado School of Mines returned the favor with a single run of their own in the bottom of the 1
st, but it would be their only one of the game.
The Cougars got another single run in the 2
nd, after
Amy Edison reached third on an error, and was brought home from a single from
Letty Valenzuela, making the score 2-1.
Liking the first pitch of the 3
rd inning,
Stephanie Day hit a homer to put the Cougars up 3-1.
Alyssa Hanks hit a single, reached second on a wild pitch, and scored after a single from
Amy Edison.
Carly Perry and
Shelbie Day both followed with singles to load the bases for
Hanna Farmer. Famer then singled to bring home Edison and Perry, giving CCU a five run lead.
The bases were loaded for the Cougs in the 4
th after singles from
Alyssa Hanks,
Shelby Fusich, and
Amy Edison.
Carly Perry didn't waste any time when she stepped up to bat, and hit a triple on the first pitch she saw to bring all three runners home. She then was brought home from a
Shelbie Day single, ending another 4 run inning.
Closing out the game with three runs in the 5
th inning to run rule the game, the Cougars sealed their 2
nd victory of the series. It started after
Kendall Yasui was walked, advanced on a wild pitch, and reached third after a single from
Stephanie Day.
Charlotte Romero then stepped up and reached on a fielding error, which scored Yasui. The runners were then advanced to second and third after a wild pitch.
Shelby Fusich then singled to bring home Day.
Amy Edison was next to bat, and was walked to once again load the bases for
Carly Perry. Perry hit a sac fly to bring home Romero, scoring the last run of the game.
The bottom of the 5
th was quick, after the Cougs only faced three batters.
Kenzie Mattey earned her 23
rd win of the year in the victory. CCU racked up a total of 18 hits in the game, and leading them was
Hanna Farmer with three hits and 2 RBI.
Carly Perry also had an impressive showing with two hits and 4 RBI.
Game 4: L 2-8
The Cougars were unable to take the momentum from game 3 into game 4, and took the loss with a final score of 8-2. The Orediggers came in and scored a single run in the bottom of the 1
st to start the game off.
CCU got their own run in the top of the 3
rd, after
Stephanie Day singled, advanced to second after
Charlotte Romero was hit by the pitch, and scored after
Alyssa Hanks hit a single.
Mines responded and scored 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, and another in the 4
th to make the score 6-1.
The second and final run of the game for the Cougars came in the top of the 5
th, after
Stephanie Day doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a single from
Charlotte Romero.
Responding with two more in the bottom of the 5
th, the Orediggers took the game after seven innings.
Stephanie Day lead the Cougs in game 4 going perfect at the plate, with 4 hits and 2 runs.
The split on the day gives CCU an overall record of 40-11, and 30-8 in the RMAC. The series closes out the regular season for CCU Softball, and it was definitely one for the books. Numerous records were broken as a team and from individuals all across the board, and the exciting part is the season does not end here. The team will head to Grand Junction, Colorado, to play in the conference tournament hosted by the Colorado Mesa Mavericks beginning on May 3
rd.
