CCU Softball advanced to the winner's bracket in the RMAC Tournament as they defeated Adams State University 2-1 in what could be called a pitcher's duel.
Â
With only 2 hits from the Grizzles and 4 from the Cougs, the spotlight was on the mound. Adam's pitcher Kacee Schroeder threw a good game, completing 6 innings with 6 strikeouts, allowing only 2 earned runs and one walk. It was silent at the plate from both squads until the bottom of the third inning when CCU's center fielder,
Hanna Farmer slapped a slow hit to Schroeder on the mound that had her reach first base. Farmer then stole second (beating her own single season record from 2017 in stolen bases at 35). Up next was left fielder
Kendall Yasui, who with a full count, tripled to center field scoring Farmer. It was Yasui's 5
th triple of the year which has her tied at 2
nd place in the RMAC.Â
Â
The Grizzles practically repeated what the Cougars did in the 3
rd inning  in the top of the 4
th. Adams had 2 hits and scored 1 run to tie the game up. That would be it for the Grizzles though. CCU's ace
Kenzie Mattey had one of her best performance all season with 13 strikeouts, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run. Mattey threw a complete game, going 7 innings.Â
Â
The game-winning run was scored by
Kendall Yasui in the bottom of the 6
th. Yasui reached base off a single to left field. After two fly-outs, the Cougars right fielder
Alyssa Hanks was up to bat with Yasui on second base, after stealing. The Cougars could not have had a better hitter at the plate, as Hanks is batting .393 and leads CCU with 19 doubles. The senior smacked a hard double hit to left field, RBI. Christian led 2-1 going into the top of the 7
th. Mattey closed the game out with two swinging strikeouts and a fly out.Â
