After taking second in the RMAC, the CCU Softball team was awarded an at large bid to get into the NCAA tournament. The team made the trek down to San Angelo, Texas, to compete against the home team and also #6 in the nation, Angelo State University for their first round of regionals.
CCU started out strong by getting on the board early, but the Rams had their day in the bottom of the second inning when they scored 7 runs, to take the win with a final score of 8-2.
The Cougs got their first run in after
Hanna Farmer led the team off with a single, and in her usual fashion she stole second.
Kendall Yasui advanced Farmer to third with a sac bunt, and she was brought in for the run after
Charlotte Romero singled up the middle.
The top of the second was a quick inning, as the Rams forced the first three batters out. They carried their momentum to the plate, and with only one out they got in three runs. With the bases loaded,
Kenzie Mattey struck out the next batter swinging to make it two outs. The next batter up hit a grand slam, which put the Rams up by six. The next few innings were quiet, until ASU got another run in the bottom of the 5
th to make the score 8-1.
CCU scored their second and final run of the game in the top of the 6
th. Similar to the first run, it came after
Hanna Farmer made it home off of
Charlotte Romero. Farmer once again started off the inning with a single, and advanced to third after two wild pitches. Romero grounded out but got the RBI as Farmer crossed the plate to make the score 8-2.
Although it was a tough loss, the Cougs are not done fighting to advance in the tournament. The team will play again on Friday, May 11
th at 3:30pm MST vs the Aggies of Cameron University. With double elimination, a loss will end their season but a win will advance them to play immediately after at 6pm MST.
