Wright, Loranger Give CCU First NCCAA Win

The Cougar baseball team began their post-season play as the top seed in the Central Region in the NCCAA Regional Tournament. Their first opponent would be the Arlington Baptist University Patriots. The Patriots are not affiliated with the NCAA or NAIA, and are solely members of the NCCAA and the ACCA conference. They finished their regular season with a 26-17, with a 15-game win streak right in the middle of their season.

There was not a ton of highlights in the 1-0 CCU victory, but the few there that there were are exceptional. The Cougars managed to collect six hits on the day, half of which came from Scotty Wright, fresh off of his RMAC Player of the Week performance at New Mexico Highlands University. Wright may have gotten three hits, but only needed one to win the game. Leading off the bottom of the 4th inning and eventually working an 0-1 count, Scotty Wright sent the second pitch he was offered over the center field wall to score what would be the winning run for CCU.

For Scotty, it was his fourth home run of the season, as well as his fourth in the previous six games. Ultimately Scotty went 3-3 at the plate in the first game, with Cooper Gray, Austin Atkerson, and Hunter Hays notching the Cougars other three hits.

The Cougars ace Joey Loranger gave the bullpen an extra day's rest today, throwing a complete game shutout in seven innings. Joey struck out three Patriots and faced the minimum batters necessary for the complete game, 21. Joey allowed just two hits, but immediately following those hits he forced a ground ball that turned into a double play. No Arlington Baptist batter made it past first base.

The Cougars will play again on Thursday, May 10th, at 5:30 p.m. CDT, 4:30 p.m. MDT, but their opponent will not be known until the first game in the morning of the 10th is completed. The Cougars will face the winner of that game.
