With their first day of play under their belts, the Cougars took on another doubleheader for their second day of games. After a tough day, the team took both losses in only three sets to both Northern State and Concordia (Ore.).
MATCH 1 VS NORTHERN STATE
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first match of the day was unfortunately a quick one for the Cougars, falling to the Wolves in three sets. The scores were 25-21, 25-22, and 25-9. Northern State's offense was quick and continually made adjustments to the Cougar defense. Colorado Christian was able to hold their own and go on runs, but the Wolves would take advantage of missed serves to break the momentum. Northern State made it through the tournament undefeated, and without even dropping a set.
MATCH LEADERS: Leading the offense was outside hitter Cali Bahnsen, with 9 kills and a .296 hitting percentage. Kylee Wurster went 1 for 1 giving her a 1.000, 26 assists and 2 aces.
MATCH 2 VS CONCORDIA (Ore.)
HOW IT HAPPENED: Coming off of a tough loss, the Cougars still didn't back down. They fought the Cavaliers in three sets, but their unforced errors did them in. Although Colorado Christian made a run at the end of the first set, they were unable to finish and lost by seven, 25-18. Concordia took their momentum from set one and made their mark, hitting an impressive .518 in set two to win 25-11. The third set the Cougars pushed offensively and kept the fight going. When they were down 23-17, the Cougars offense came alive but could not come back from the deficit. The final score of set three was determined by only a few points, 25-22.
MATCH LEADERS: Even after three tiring matches, Jacey Johnson prevailed in the fourth match and lead the team offensively. She tallied 12 kills, and hit a .400. Not far behind her percentage wise was Hope Baldrica with a .333 on four kills during her 12 attempts. She didn't have one hitting error.Â
After an impressive weekend, senior middle blocker Hope Baldrica was named to the All-Tournament Team. Baldrica lead the team with overall hitting percentage and in blocks. She was able to drive the teams momentum and rise up even when the pressure was on. Her energy helped carry the team when it was needed the most.Â
Although the Cougars season did not start with the record they were hoping for, they faced strong opponents and learned more about their own strengths and weaknesses. The next match for the Cougars will be their home opener, hosting Angelo State on August 29th at 5pm.
