The CCU women's soccer headed to Gunnison, CO, this afternoon to take on the Mountaineers of Western Colorado State University. Each team was looking for their first RMAC win in the first weekend of conference play, and the Mountaineers did just that, defeating the Cougars 2-1.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Mountaineers got off to as good of a start as possible, scoring in just the second minute of the match from a corner kick. After that fast start, the game would slow down considerably, with both teams combining for just five shots for the rest of the half.
Â
The second half saw the Cougars even the score with a goal off a corner kick of their own, when Renee De Le Torre's offering found the head of
Kennady McCullough the level to score. For Kennady, who typically sees more action on the defensive side of the ball, it was her first goal of the season, and third of her career.
Â
But Western would continue their attack and netted what would eventually turn out to be the game winning goal in the 65th minute, sealing the victory for the Mountaineers.
Â
GAME/MATCH/RACE LEADERS:
- Ireland VanDyke faced 11 shots on goal, stopping nine of them.
- Kennady McCullough became the sixth Cougar to score in a match this season, no Cougar has more than one so far this season.
UP NEXT: With their record sitting at 1-3-2 overall, and 0-2, the Cougars will embark on their final road trip for a few weeks when they head to Las Vegas, NM, on Friday, September 21, with game time slated for 5:00 p.m.
