Cougars Earn First Conference Sweep

Opening their weekend with the sweep, the Cougars took the Thunderwolves of CSU Pueblo in three sets. This win breaks the trade-off streak the two teams have had against each other as Colorado Christian took the win in 2017 and 2015, and CSU Pueblo in 2016.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Set one was close until the final stretch when the teams were tied up at 20's, and the Cougars went on a five point run to win the set after three kills in a row, putting the pressure on and forcing two errors on the Thunderwolves side. The Cougars hit a match high of .300 in the first set.

Trading runs, the teams continued to battle it out in set two. The Thunderwolves offense played a cleaner game, but at the same time they were not able to get the ball on the ground thanks to the Cougar defense. While Colorado Christian on the other hand had a match high of 20 kills. The set was closed out by an exciting kill from Katie Henry.

As the match progressed, CSU Pueblo continued to up their game, continually improving their stats in each set. Set three again saw both teams trading runs, but the Cougars notched ahead at 23-20. However the Thunderwolves were not backing down, and continued to battle until the teams were tied up at 26. Thanks to back to back kills from the outsides, Cali Bahnsen and Jacey Johnson, the Cougars were able to seal the sweep with a final score of 28-26.

MATCH LEADERS: Leading the Cougars in percentage and in kills was outside hitter Cal Bahnsen, tallying 18 kills and hitting .395. Jacey Johnson was also in the double digits with 11. The middles had an impressive offensive showing tonight as well, Kristy Dick hitting a .385 with 7 kills, and Katie Henry hitting a .360 with 9 kills and 0 errors. Three Cougars had double digit digs, including Mariela Gonzalez, Jacey Johnson, and Christa Tucker with 21, 17, and 11 respectively.

WHAT'S NEXT: The win for the team was crucial going forward, with both teams back to back in the RMAC standings. The Cougars overall record is now 5-10, with a conference record of 3-3. Colorado Christian will continue their home weekend as they host their Military Appreciation night against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday, September 22nd at 5pm.
