Cougars Win RMAC Home Opener

The Cougars improved to 3-4-2 on Friday afternoon after defeating the Grizzlies from Adams State University by a score of 2-1. The Cougs win brings their RMAC record to 2-3 in their opening home conference game.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Just 12 minutes into the first half, senior Hannah Triem put her first goal of the season in the back of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Amanda Lopez assisted on the goal, her first assist of the year. The Cougars would play out the rest of the first half staving off six shots from the Adams State offense.

The second half saw CCU tack on another goal to their lead when Amanda Lopez added to her daily point total with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute, bringing her total to three points for the day, and 11 on the season. Though the Cougars allowed a goal, their defense on the day was stellar. Adams State took 14 shots, forcing Ireland Van Dyke to make five saves on the day. Also chipping in with her own defensive prowess was senior Kennady McCullough who anchored the back line and blocked three shots on her own.

QUOTES: After the game, senior Hannah Triem was asked what this win means for the team going into Sunday's match against Fort Lewis "It gives us momentum that we have struggled to keep early in the season. In a lot of games, we have gained momentum, scored goals, and then got scored on, so this momentum is something we can keep moving forward."

When asked about her goal, Triem said, "It definitely propels me and motivates me in my senior season. I'd love to have more goals, but honestly, whatever the team needs me to do, whether that is assists or goals, I'll do it."

GAME LEADERS:
  • Stephanie Muchow led all players in the game with five shots, three of which were on goal.
  • Amanda Lopez's nine conference points puts her in second place in the RMAC during conference play.

UP NEXT: The Cougars will host the Skyhawks from Fort Lewis College on Sunday the 30th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, CO.
