Closing out their weekend with a bang, the Cougars ended with an exciting win against the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College. Colorado Christian's strong second half brought them back to finish with the 4 point win, 70-66.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The game started with the Skyhawks on the board first, which quickly turned into a 5 point lead. After three minutes without either team scoring, the Cougars were able to rally back and make the deficit just 1 going into the second quarter, 15-14.
The second quarter the Cougars kept a consistent offense and scored 14 again. Fort Lewis however landed 19 to give them a 6 point lead going into the locker rooms, 34-28. At the half Colorado Christian was led offensively by Jordan Baer with 12 points.
Coming into the second half the Cougars played stronger all around, scoring 18 and holding the Skyhawks to their lowest quarter with 10. Colorado Christian tied up the score with just under a minute left in the quarter, but after a steal and buzzer beater jumper from Davenport Brantley the Cougars had the upper hand going into the fourth quarter, 46-44.
Only giving up the lead once in the fourth despite the close game, the Cougars were able to continue to stay strong and come away with the win. Davenport Brantley came in clutch after making her final four free throws to keep the team ahead. Although Colorado Christian only outscored Fort Lewis by 2 in the fourth, their strong third quarter brought them through with the 4 point win.
GAME LEADERS: Leading the Cougars offensively was Sarah McGinley with 27 after going 5-8 from beyond the arc. Also in the double digits was Jordan Baer and Marie Tsoungui with 16 and 10 respectively.
UP NEXT: The win gives the Cougars an overall record of 9-10, and a conference record of 7-6. The team will travel for the next two weekends beginning with Western State on Friday, February 1st at 5:30pm.
