DENVER – Hoping to play spoiler and end the season on high note was Friday night's goal for the Colorado Christian volleyball squad. The conference leaders had different plans.
Regis fought off a valiant effort from Colorado Christian as the eighth-ranked Rangers notched a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The contest opened strongly in the Cougars favor as Cali Bahnsen notched five kills in the first 14 points in helping her team gain a 10-4 edge. The home team scratched its way back and tied the score at 15-15 before taking the lead at 19-18; which methodically grew to 23-21 as Colorado Christian called a timeout. The top ranked team in the South Central region put together back-to-back block assists to close out the first frame.
Similar to the first set, the early moments of the second stanza went the way of the Cougars. Aided by a solid hitting effort, Colorado Christian jumped out to a 9-7 edge. After a Bahnsen block, they took a three-point advantage (14-11). They carried that three-point lead to 20-17 but the Rangers won eight of the set's final 10 points to take a two-set match lead.
The opening points in the third set went back-and-forth until Regis took an 11-8 edge. They pushed the lead to 14-10 as Colorado Christian asked for a timeout. The Rangers ballooned that lead to 17-10 and never relented in grabbing the sweep.
