AUSTIN, TX – Colorado Christian started the season on the road, traveling down to Austin, Texas to take on St. Edwards in the D2 Conference Challenge Tournament.
The two teams played a competitive first half, with the Cougars trailing by ten heading into halftime. The second half the Hilltoppers pulled away, scoring double digits in the 3rd and 4th quarters to seal the 72-44 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars took an early lead, scoring five of the first eight points in the first half. St. Edwards regained the lead a few moments later as they went on an 11 point run. The first quarter ended with St. Edwards outscoring Colorado Christian 18-11.
The Cougars kept it close in the second quarter, trading blows back and forth with the Hilltoppers, neither team was able to get more than a three point scoring run at any point in the quarter. Going into halftime the score was 33-23 in favor of St. Edwards.
In the third quarter the Hilltoppers started to pull away as they outscored the Grizzlies 26-8. Brianna Pribble led the team in scoring in the quarter with three points.
The final quarter the Cougars played St. Edwards, with each team scoring 13 in the fourth, the Cougars scored six in a row to bring the score gap to 22 but that is as close as they would get. St. Edwards battled their way to the 72-44 victory.
COUGAR LEADERS: Sam Nunez, Lourdes Gonzalez, and Brookelyn Hurlbut lead the team with nine points.Gonzalez had three offensive rebounds and seven rebounds on defense, Hurlbut had eight defensive rebounds. Olivia Christy and Gonzalez both had two assists on the day. Christy led the team with 32 minutes played, Nunez was second with 30 minutes.
STATS FROM THE GAME:
- The Cougars scored nine points off turnovers.
- Second chance points accounted for six points on the day.
- The bench for Colorado Christian scored 12 points.
- Cougars recorded 18 points in the paint.
