Year Ends on a High Note with Cougars Comeback Win

DENVER – For the final game of 2019 Colorado Christian traveled to the capital to battle the Regis Rangers.

A close affair throughout the Cougars came alive in the final quarter scoring 21 points to win by three, 70-67.

HOW IT HAPPENED: A high scoring first quarter saw both teams come out of the gate firing on all cylinders, a five point run at the end of the quarter allowed for the Rangers to lead after one, 23-19.

The second quarter went much like the first, the Cougars stayed close but couldn't quite take the lead as they went into halftime down by seven, and Marie Tsoungui led the team with seven points going into half.

The Cougars started slow out of the half as they were down by as many as eleven in the third quarter, thankfully it's not how you start it's how you finish, and down eleven heading into the fourth the Cougars were about to show the Rangers just that.

The fourth quarter was still a nail biter as the Cougars scored 21 points and the Rangers only scored seven, the Cougars took the lead with 39 seconds left in the game as Olivia Christy hit a three pointer from way beyond the arc. After clutch rebounding Christy hit two free throws to ice the game.

COUGAR LEADERS: In her first game with the team Taylor Ferris led the team with 20 points. Lourdes Gonzalez had 9 rebounds and Tsoungui had four assists.

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • The bench continued to contribute as they scored 34 points
  • The team scored 36 points in the paint

QUOTES FROM THE TEAM:

Taylor Ferris on her first win with the team: "It was really cool to win this game with everyone chipping in and it was a real team win. It was a good momentum builder heading into break. To steal this win on the road was massive. I am so proud of us because we really played as a team."

Head Coach Corey Laster: It's all on the players, they stepped up tonight, Marie and Sanji had big minutes, Taylor Ferris is someone we've been waiting for and she gave us a steady presence on the inside.

UP NEXT: The Cougars are back in action in the New Year on January 3 as they travel to Pueblo, CO against CSU-Pueblo. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
