Colorado Christian Softball has officially opened up their 2019 campaign. Beginning their season in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Desert Stinger Tournament the Cougars began the season with two losses. Colorado Christian took the loss to Western Oregon, then played immediately against Saint Martin's and lost by just one run.
GAME 1 VS WOU: L 3-8
The Cougars started out the game strong, scoring three runs right away.
Hanna Farmer got the team running after kicking off the game with a double.
Kacie Burger stepped up and landed a single that brought home Farmer.
Charlotte Romero was next up, and hit another double to put the runners on second and third. After a passed ball, Burger was able to score the Cougars second run of the game. Romero had advanced to third on the passed ball, then was brought home by a single from
Stephanie Day to finish off their final run of the game.
The Wolves were quick to respond and got three runs in right away as well, leaving the teams tied up going into the second inning. Both teams were quiet until Western Oregon was able to get another run in the bottom of the fourth. The Wolves finished off the game with two runs in both the sixth and seventh to give them 8 runs total.
Colorado Christian finished the game with 3 runs, 9 hits, and 2 errors.
GAME 2 VS SAINT MARTINS: L 10-11
Despite coming off of a loss the Cougars came out swinging in their second game. The team started out strong, landing 6 runs in the first inning.
Hanna Farmer reached first after getting hit by a pitch, then stole second.
Kendall Yasui was then walked to put runners on first and second. After a single from
Kacie Burger the Cougars had the bases loaded.
Charlotte Romero then reached first on a fielder's choice as Farmer was out at home, but
Stephanie Day was then walked which scored Yasui to put the team on the board. It was hard to stop them after that as a singles streak ensued.
Carly Perry singled to bring home Burger, then
Shelby Fusich singled to bring home Day, followed by
Piper Lujan bringing home Perry, closed out with a single from
Hanna Farmer to bring home Fusich to give them 8.
Colorado Christian was able to hold the Saints for the first couple innings, but Saint Martin's came out in the third and scored 7 to tighten up the score. However thanks to a single run in the second and third the Cougars were up 8-7 going into the fourth. The Cougars single run in the second inning came from a homerun from
Kacie Burger, earning the first of the year for the team.
The next couple innings were scoreless, but the Saints broke the streak in the bottom of the sixth when they scored 4 to put them ahead by 3. The Cougars started out the final inning with 2 outs.
Hanna Farmer and
Kendall Yasui did not let the pressure hold them back and hit back to back singles.
Kacie Burger then singled, but an error from the Saints allowed both Farmer and Yasui to score. Unable to bring Burger home, the team took the tough loss by just 1.
UP NEXT: The two losses gives the Cougars an overall record of 0-2. The team will continue on in the tournament on Saturday, February 2nd as they play Azusa Pacific at 2pm, followed by Sonoma State at 8pm.
