AZUSA, CA – The Cougars offense had a tough time coming to life as they closed out their trip to southern California.
In a pair of seven-inning games, Colorado Christian dropped both ends of their doubleheader with No. 8 Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
GAME ONE – No. 8 Azusa Pacific 1, Colorado Christian 0
In a pitchers dual that took just over 90 minutes to compete, the Cougars got a complete game performance out of Connor McCullum.
The righthander struck out five and allowed five hits during his 96-pitch performance. The junior transfer felt right at home as he toed the rubber just an hour from his hometown of Huntington Beach. The only run he allowed came in the first inning when Azusa Pacific scored the game's lone run on a double play groundout.
Colorado Christian couldn't get a runner into scoring position. They pieced together a pair of two-hit innings but each time fell victim to a double play to end the threat.
For his part Azusa Pacific starting pitching A.J. Woodall also threw a complete game. The lefthander allowed five hits and struck out four without giving-up a walk during his 72-pitch effort.
Joel Manzano had two of the Cougars five base knocks.
GAME TWO – No. 8 Azusa Pacific 13, Colorado Christian 2
Azusa Pacific raced out to a 4-0 lead after two innings but the Cougars put two runs on the scoreboard in the third on RBIs from Hunter Hays and Tommy Orr to get right back into the contest. However, from that point forward the home team controlled the game. The big blow came in the fourth frame when they increased their lead from 5-2 to 12-2 with a seven-run stanza.
The Cougars mustered three hits during the nightcap.
