The CCU track and field team traveled to Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., for a final tune-up before heading to Alamosa, CO, next week to compete in the RMAC Indoor Championships. Based on the results from this weekends meet, this was one of the most successful competitions of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The squads both placed high in the team competition, with the women taking 2nd overall and the men placing 6th. The women's side was led by a small army of top finishers at various distances. Carissa Wight took 7th in the finals of the 60-meter dash, same place that Rachel Lucas took in the 200-meter dash. Lucas pulled double duty, competing as one of CCU's few field athletes, taking 6th in the long jump, marking a distance of 14' 3 ¼". Fellow Cougar Madison Anderson edged out Lucas in the long jump, clearing 14' 5" to take 5th place. Cydne Hitchings pushed her way to 4th place in the 400-meter dash, while Hannah Causey cruised to an 8th place finish in the mile. Anna Spykstra kept the top finishes coming by taking 2nd in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.40 seconds.
The day was topped for the women's squad during the 3,000-meter where CCU placed the top four finishers in the race, led by junior Kayla Hanson who crossed the tape in a time of 10:43.50. Hanson was followed by Mandee Middleton (10:44.25), Christina Hamerly (10:54.34), and Ana Muehlbauer (11:01.55). The Cougars were not only on top of the race, but well represented throughout as well. Michaela Marcy finished 6th followed not too far behind by Kenzie Hartwig in 8th.
Jack Ball helped the men's side by placing 5th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 53.13, edging out 6th place by 0.03 seconds.
