Storer and Luna Set Sights on Nationals, Mile and 5k to Ensue at Virginia Beach

Lakewood, CO - With the national lists released, the Cougars will be sending the likes of Matthew Storer and Mateo Luna to Virginia Beach, VA to compete in the 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. Both coming off of a stellar indoor season, Luna will compete in the mile and Storer will compete in the 5k.

Luna has had one of the most accredited seasons in CCU history this indoor season, improving time after time. Luna would open the season in style, shattering the school record in the 800 with a 1:51 national provisional mark. A week later in Topeka, KS, Luna would etch his name into the school record books as the second fastest miler in Cougar history with a 4:04 mile, only to run a 4:02 mile two weeks later at Boston, both national Provisional's.  The race in Boston would serve as the national qualifier, Luna getting in as the 18th and final competitor in the mile. Luna would close the RMAC Indoor Championships with a 5th place finish in the mile, only to run a 7th place finish in the 800 an hour later.

This will be Luna's first ever NCAA Indoor Championships, and will be the first Cougar running the indoor mile since 2023. Now competing against the nations best at a favorable sea-level track, Luna looks to turn heads at the national level.

Matthew Storer, no stranger to the national stage, returns for his 4th trip to NCAA Indoor Championships. Storer would qualify his first attempt of the indoor season, racing the grueling 5k at Western Colorado, coming across the line for a converted 13:57. Storer would race the 3k once at CU Boulder and the 5k again in Boston to gear up for the RMAC Indoor Championships. Storer would race well at the RMAC Championships, claiming a 2nd place finish in the 5k amongst the most competitive DII conference.

Storer has had two 5th place finishes in the Indoor 5k in 2023 and 2024. The last Indoor race of his collegiate career, Storer no doubt looks to finish stronger than ever before and make a final statement on the national stage.

The NCAA Division II Indoor Championships are set in Virginia Beach, VA on March 13th-14th, with live streams and live stats available.
