Opening up their weekend with a big win, the Cougars defeated the Griffins of Westminster University at their place by 11, with a final score of 76-65. The last time the teams met, Colorado Christian fell in Lakewood by 18. Westminster currently holds the second in the conference while the Cougars are fighting their way into the top 8 to secure a spot in the RMAC tournament.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Westminster jumped on a quick 6 point lead to start the game, but the Cougars tied it up close to the four minute mark. At the end of the quarter Colorado Christian had the upper hand by 2, 18-16.
Sarah McGinley led the charge with 11 points.
Madison Price opened up the second quarter with a three, which was followed by two more from
Brianna Pribble and
Jordan Baer to put them up by 8. Finishing out the quarter how they started it,
Davenport Brantley closed out the quarter for Colorado Christian with another three to put the team up by 6, 37-31.
The third quarter saw both teams playing tighter defense after getting a better read on the opposing team. But yet again the Cougars closed out the quarter with a 3, this time from
Jordan Baer to put them up by 6 going into the final quarter.
Only a minute into the fourth quarter the Griffins had shortened the Cougars lead to 2. Colorado Christian continued to play strong and chipped away at their lead, forcing Westminster to start fouling near the end of the game. Knocking in all six of the final free throws, Colorado Christian sealed the win by eleven.
GAME LEADERS: Leading the Cougars in scoring tonight was
Sarah McGinley who finished with 25 points. Three others were also in the double digit range after strong offensive efforts across the board.
Jordan Baer had 16,
Davenport Brantley had 14, and
Madison Price had 10. Baer also led the team in rebounds and assists with 6 both ways.
UP NEXT: The win gives the team an even overall record of 13-13 and an RMAC record of 11-9. Finishing out their weekend in Utah the Cougars will play the Trailblazers of Dixie State on Saturday, February 23rd at 5:30pm for their second to last regular season game.
