Starting off their conference campaign swinging, the Cougars opened up RMAC play with two big wins in a doubleheader against the Grizzlies of Adams State and the Trailblazers of Dixie State.
GAME 1 VS ASU: W 9-3
The Cougars got the day going strong in their first game against the Grizzlies by playing steady offense and scoring in all but two innings. With a quick two runs in the first inning, the team got their momentum started early.
Hanna Farmer started Colorado Christian off by walking and then stealing second. She was followed by
Kendall Yasui with a single, and
Kacie Burger was walked to load the bases.
Stephanie Day reached on a fielder's choice as the Grizzlies got Farmer out at home.
Charlotte Romero then brought home Yasui and Burger after single to the left side.
Starting off the second inning, Farmer was yet again the first to reach base for the Cougars. Farmer singled then advanced on a throwing error, advanced to third on a ground out, and made it home after Burger singled. Day then reached first on a fielding error, and was followed by a single from
Charlotte Romero to bring home Burger and score their fourth run. Adams took advantage of a Cougar error in the bottom of the second to score a single run to make the score 4-1 going into the third.
The Cougars scored a single run in the third after making use of a Grizzly error. Colorado Christian then had a couple scoreless innings, but the Grizzlies snagged another single run in the fifth after a couple errors from the Cougars.
Kicking off the sixth inning with a homerun,
Kacie Burger set the tone. With three singles in a row from
Stephanie Day,
Charlotte Romero, and
Shelby Fusich, the bases were loaded. After a wild pitch, all the runners advanced to score Day for their second run of the inning.
Piper Lujan then hit a sac fly to bring home pinch runner McKenna Gordon, putting the Cougars up 8-2 going into the bottom of the sixth. Adams snagged another single run to give them their final score of 3.
The final run for Colorado Christian came in the seventh after
Kendall Yasui reached on an error, advanced to second, and was brought home by a single from
Stephanie Day.
Kenzie Mattey stayed on the mound for the entire game to take the win, giving her an overall record of 5-2.
GAME 2 VS DSU: W 7-6
The battle with the #13 Dixie State Trailblazers was more challenging and a tight game to the very end. Although the Cougars were outhit by the Trailblazers 4 to 11, they prevailed to take the win 7-6.
Hanna Farmer was the first to score for the Cougars, after reaching on an error, advancing on a passed ball, then advanced to third and scored on another error. The second inning saw both teams go three up three down, and the third saw only one hit between the teams. The Trailblazers scored their first run of the game after leading off the fourth inning with a homerun.
With the score tied at 1-1 going into the sixth, Colorado Christian stepped up to take the lead and scored three runs.
Stephanie Day and
Shelby Fusich were on first and second after being walked. With two outs,
Alex Garlock reached on an error and scored both runners.
Jamie Romero then singled to bring home Garlock for the third run. The Cougars were able to hold the Trailblazers again in the sixth with three up three down, but Dixie responded with only facing three batters in the top of the seventh then scoring 3 runs of their own in the bottom to tie up the game.
Making the extra inning count,
Stephanie Day led off and hit a homerun to score the Cougars first run.
Charlotte Romero then reached on an error, and was followed by
Shelby Fusich with a double.
Alex Garlock then hit a single to bring them both home for their final runs of the game. Dixie started out their extra inning strong as well, with bases loaded and one out. Only able to score two of their runners, the Trailblazers were beaten after the Cougars stayed strong through the pressure to win.
Jennifer Romero pitched 7.1 innings with 7 strikeouts to take the win, giving her a record of 2-1.
Kenzie Mattey came in to close and take the save.
UP NEXT: The back to back wins gives Colorado Christian an overall record of 8-5 and an RMAC record of 2-0. The Cougars will face the same two teams in another doubleheader tomorrow, February 25th, as they play the host school Dixie State at 11am followed by Adams State at 1pm.
