Colorado Christian began their streak of Oklahoma games against Northeastern State – and after a couple strong innings and great defensive play the Cougars came away with the win.
Northeastern State started out the game swinging. The Riverhawks got up three runs and three hits in the first inning, but this would be the only time they would score. The Cougars got up one in the bottom of the first, after
Stephanie Day hit a triple and was brought home by a single from
Shelby Fusich.
The second inning was quick – the Riverhawks went three up three down and the Cougars got in one hit. Colorado Christian took the lead in the bottom of the third when they scored three runs. The inning started strong with
Kendall Yasui leading off with a triple. She was brought home immediately when Day followed with a double. Day then scored thanks to
Charlotte Romero advancing her to third and
Carly Perry bringing her home. Perry stole second and was brought home to close out the inning thanks to a double from
Jamie Romero.
The next time the Cougars were able to score was in the bottom of the fifth when they landed a single run. They continued to hold Northeastern from scoring, and got in another three runs in the sixth. Yasui and Day hit back to back singles, and were both advanced on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third, Romero hit another single to bring both runners home. Closing out with another single to bring home Romero, Fusich singled to left field to score the Cougars final run. Colorado Christian finished the 8-3 win with 14 hits.
Kenzie Mattey took the win on the mound to give her a 2-1 record.
UP NEXT: The win gives the team a record of 2-2 overall. Colorado Christian will play ten more games in Oklahoma before returning, with their next couple games against Fort Hays State and Southern Nazarene on Sunday, February 10th at 9am and 5pm.
