Colorado Christian baseball had to wait over an hour past their scheduled start time against the University of Mary to finish their weekend games, but it was worth the wait as they recorded their second straight shutout of the weekend, defeating the Marauders 4-0 in Friday afternoons finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game originally scheduled for 2:00 pm was delayed an hour and fifteen minutes as the University of Mary finished the days first game against MSU Denver, which the Roadrunners took by a score of 31-3. Once the game began at 3:15 pm, it was straight to business for both teams. CCU opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when singles from Connor Marshall and Matt Kimura each scored a run. Kimura contributed again in the bottom half of the fourth inning when his sac bunt scored Heath Hays, allowing Kimura to reach base on the fielders choice. An error on Kimura's sacrifice play allowed Marshall to advance to second and was brought home shortly after on a sac fly from Joel Manzano, capping the scoring for the game.
Pitching again was a huge factor as three Cougs made contributions to a combined shutout. Starter Justin Kiedinger earned his first win of the season after throwing five innings of three hit ball, striking out six. Normally a starter himself, Evan Fink came in for a relief appearance in an effort to get some work in after losing out on previous opportunities due to weather cancellations. Fink went three innings, allowed just two hits and struck out another five Marauders. Finally, Zach Haning came in for the top of the ninth inning to close things out. With a four run lead Haning couldn't earn a save, but he did avoid allowing any Mary batters to reach base.
