HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Game 1, CCU 6 – Adams State 8
Â
The first game of the doubleheader began with the Grizzlies taking an 0-2 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Cougars were quick to respond in the top of the second with a
Scotty Ingle single up the middle, knocking in two runs and tying the game up going into the 3rd. Adams State took the lead with a single and a home run, putting four more runs on the board which would be answered by a single run in the 4th and a
Heath Hays homer in the 5th. The Grizzlies extended their lead by two more runs scored off of a wild pitch and a single through the right side to close out the bottom of the 5th inning. The action resumed in the top of the 8th when
Tommy Orr knocked in a run and was later brought home by another
Scotty Ingle single. Despite their best efforts at a comeback, the Cougars lost game one 6-8.
Â
Game 2, CCU 7 – Adams State 6
Â
Game two for the Cougars was a Connor McCullum start on the mound who threw a solid six innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs, but earning his second season of the season.
Matt Kimura scored the first run for the Cougars in the top of the 1st while Franky Shearn arrived at home again in the 2nd providing the Cougars with a 2-0 lead. The lead was short lived as the Grizzlies answered back with two runs tying the game. The Cougars were not done yet and went on to score four runs in the top of the fourth only for Adams State to score one run in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, to cut the CCU lead to 6-5. The 7th inning provided one more insurance run for the Cougars which would prove to be invaluable as the Grizzlies final inning rally would fall short, scoring only one in the bottom of the 7th, leading to a final score of 7-6 with
Kyler Riordan gaining his first save in a Cougar uniform.
