Closing out their weekend with the sweep over Chadron State and their tenth win in a row, the Cougars finished their first official home weekend with flying colors.
GAME 1: 16-4 (5 innings)
Coming off of two run-rule wins the day before, Colorado Christian came in to today's games with momentum and true home field advantage for the second day in a row. Scoring three runs in the first inning the Cougars got the bats going early. Hanna Farmer was the first to score after walking, stealing second, then made it home after a triple from Stephanie Day. Day did not have to wait for long, and was brought home by the next batter on a sac fly from Charlotte Romero. With the final run of the inning, Kacie Burger hit yet another homerun to give the Cougars three runs.
Scoring five runs in the second Colorado Christian was yet again gaining momentum. Jamie Romero was the first on base after being walked, and advanced to second after a single from Caitlin McCarthy. Hanna Farmer then laid down a bunt for another single, and the runners were advanced but got an extra bag after an error to bring home Jamie Romero. Farmer then stole second to put runners on second and third with Kendall Yasui at the plate. Yasui then hit a 2 RBI double to make the score 6-0. The bases were then loaded after Kacie Burger reached on a fielder's choice and Shelby Fusich was hit by the pitch for the first time of the day, but not the first of the series. Carly Perry then doubled to bring home Burger and Yasui, making the score 8-0 going into the third.
The Eagles were able to notch in a couple runs in the top of the third, but it was not enough to stop the run rule. Colorado Christian scored a single run in the third after Jamie Romero walked, advanced to second from a Kendall Yasui single, and made it home after a double from Stephanie Day.
Scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars had their best inning of the game. Kacie Burger led off with a single through the left side, and was followed by Alex Garlock reaching on a fielder's choice but advanced all the way to third after an error. Burger then made it home after an RBI single from Carly Perry down the right line. Megan Gordon was then walked to load the bases, and after Hanna Farmer walked which brought home Garlock. With a 2 RBI single from Kendall Yasui, Colorado Christian was then leading 13-2. She was followed by Stephanie Day who hit a 3 run homer to put them up by 14.
Chadron got a couple runs in the top of the fifth to shorten the deficit to 12, making the final score 16-4 after five innings.
Makena Martin took her second win of the season on the mound after pitching three innings.
GAME 2: 4-2
Starting out on the mound for game two of the day was Jennifer Romero, going three up three down in the first. With a 2-2 count, Stephanie Day hit a homerun in the bottom of the inning to give make the score 1-0 going into the second. Facing only three Eagles in the second, it was another quick inning. Shelby Fusich hit a triple to lead off the second, but the Cougars were unable to bring her home.
With another single run in the bottom of the third, the Cougars were then up 2-0 after Kendall Yasui hit a bunt to single, stole second but advanced to third on an error, and was brought home on a ground out. Starting off the fourth inning, Jennifer Romero faced only three batters for the third time in the game. Fellow sophomore Kacie Burger then hit a homerun to put Colorado Christian up 3-0.
The Eagles scored a single run in the fifth, and held the Cougars in the bottom of the fifth after facing three of them. But Colorado Christian responded and got yet another single run in the bottom of the sixth for their final run of the series. Stephanie Day led off with a double, and scored after a single from Charlotte Romero. Before the inning was over, Shelby Fusich was hit by the pitch yet again.
Chadron stepped up in the seventh and the first batter hit a homerun to make the score 4-2, but they were unable to score again and take the win. On the mound for the entire game was, Jennifer Romero earning her seventh win of the year to close out the weekend.
UP NEXT: The weekend sweep gave the Cougars their tenth win in a row, and an impressive conference record of 14-2 and an overall record 20-7. Colorado Christian put on a show this weekend, with impressive hitting across the board that could not be stopped. The team will be away for their next few matchups, with a pair of mid-week makeup games against MSU Denver on Tuesday the 26th at 3pm and 5pm before traveling to CSU Pueblo for double headers on the 30th and 31st.
