GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A pair of three-run performances wasn't enough against the top ranked team in the nation.
Colorado Mesa swept a Saturday doubleheader from the Cougars with a pair of seven-inning wins on the western slope.
GAME ONE – No. 1 Colorado Mesa 22, Colorado Christian 3
After a promising start, things quickly turned against the Cougars.
In the opening frame Alex Ginn, seeing action as the designated hitter just a day after starting on the mound in the first game of the series, notched a one-out double to left centerfield to score Hunter Hays. Colorado Christian took a three-run lead before the Mavericks came to the plate when a fielding error with two outs scored Joel Manzano and Ginn with two outs.
The home team put together a strong offensive display as they scored 22 unanswered runs. Except in one inning, Colorado Mesa scored at least two runs in each frame. The Mavericks pounded out 18 hits, five of them for extra bases, en route to their victory.
GAME TWO – No. 1 Colorado Mesa 14, Colorado Christian 3
Similar to their performance in the opener, the Mavericks score in all but one of the innings in posting the win.
The home team jumped on Colorado Christian starting pitcher Evan Fink in the first inning by scoring seven times. They upped their lead to double figures with a three-run second frame. The Mavericks plated at least one run during innings three through five.
In the sixth inning, the Cougars put a three-spot on the scoreboard as Sam Gallegos, Kaleb Sorensen and Scotty Ingle all crossed the plate.
Ingle was a bright spot for the Colorado Christian at the plate as he reached base three times with a pair of walks and an RBI double.
