Cougars Top No. 1 Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It is not often you get a chance to post a win against the nation's top ranked team. The Cougars can now claim such a victory.

Colorado Christian rushed out to an early lead and never looked back in posting an 8-5 win at the Colorado Mesa.

It is the second straight season the Cougars beat a top 10 Colorado Mesa team. Last year they also notched an 8-5 win against the Mavericks.

HOW IT HAPPENED: After the Mavericks scored a run in the first inning, the Cougars put up a five-spot on the scoreboard in the second frame. Matt Kimura's RBI single with two outs to center field started the scoring. Back-to-back walks forced in a run as Colorado Christian took the lead for good. After a pitching change, the Cougars took advantage of an outfield error to score the final three runs during their turn at the plate.

The home team was able to get across another run in their half of the stanza but a Kaleb Sorensen homerun to left field in the third got that run right back. The Cougars added to their lead with a two-run fourth inning. Hunter Hays popped a two-run shot to left field, which scored Kimura, as Colorado Christian took an 8-2 lead.

Colorado Mesa cut their deficit down to four runs by scoring two in their portion of the fourth inning. From that point forward the offense's cooled down. No runner reached second base until the seventh inning when the home team scored the game's final run. The Mavericks tried to mount a rally in the ninth frame but a double play ended the game.

COUGAR LEADERS: Hays led the way with a 2-for-4 effort. The second baseman also scored twice and drove home two runs while drawing a walk as well. Sorensen also went 2-for-4 with Kimura notching a two-hit, two-run afternoon.

On the mound Justin Kiedinger went 6.2 innings and struck out five to earn his second win of the season. Zach Haning threw the final 2.1 innings to earn his third save of the campaign.

UP NEXT: The Cougars are schedule to host an RMAC series against MSU Denver. The four-game set at All-Star Park begins on Friday and ends Sunday.
