Late Rally Falls Short

CCU baseball played their first game of the season almost two full months ago on February 7, were finally able to hold their opening day festivities today when they hosted MSU Denver in their first official home game of the year. The Roadrunner spoiled the Cougars day as they took game one of the four game series by a score of 3-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Metro State took an early two run lead in the 1st inning when they smashed back-to-back homeruns off of starting pitcher Alex Ginn. The Roadrunners would add another run in the top of the 3rd inning and another trio in the top of the 5th inning. The Cougars would be held scoreless until the bottom of the 7th inning when Scotty Ingle was standing on third base and took advantage of a wild pitch, scoring before the MSU Denver catcher could find the ball. Kaleb Sorenson ground out in the bottom of the 9th inning, but hit it well enough to score Connor Marshall, making it a 2-7 game. Ingle, who currently leads the team in hitting with a .333 batting average, again came in clutch, launching a deep sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th to score Carter Mossey.

The Cougars were ultimate done in by the Roadrunners two, three, and four hitters who went 8-12 at the plate and accounted for all seven runs scored and six RBI's, only one other MSU Denver player recorded a hit in the game. The Cougar bats were held in check for the majority of the game, notching their only multi-base hit, a Carter Mossey double down the left field line, and multi-hit frame in the bottom of the 9th inning. Alex Ginn picked up his fourth loss of the season, giving up six earned runs on nine hits and striking out four. Connor McCullum, Drew Kennedy, and Jarrod Rivera all saw action in relief, allowing a combined one hit, one earned run, and striking out six.
