Pair of Wins in Pueblo

Opening up their series at CSU Pueblo with a pair of wins, the Cougars had a strong day on the field against the Thunderwolves.

GAME 1: W 8-2

After a couple quiet innings, Colorado Christian landed a 6 run inning in the third to be the first on the board after a few errors from the Thunderwolves. On the defensive side the Cougars went the first three innings in a row only facing three batters each round. The big inning got started unexpectedly after there was two outs on the board after the first two batters. But Hanna Farmer stepped up and walked, stole second, then made it home on an error that put Kendall Yasui on first. Stephanie Day singled, then advanced on an error that scored Yasui and put Charlotte Romero on first. Kacie Burger then singled to score Day, making the score 3-0. After Caitlin McCarthy was hit by the pitch the bases were loaded for Shelby Fusich, who reached on an error but advanced on the throw which scored all three runners to close out the inning.

CSU Pueblo scored a pair of runs in the fourth, but was unable to score again. Colorado Christian scored a pair of runs of their own in the sixth – the first one coming from a homerun from Caitlin McCarthy. The second one came after Shelby Fusich hit a double and her pinch runner Megan Gordon scored after another Thunderwolf error.

Jennifer Romero earned her eighth win of the year on the mound after tallying seven strikeouts in six innings.

GAME 2: W 18-5

Taking the second game with a little more vengeance, the Cougar bats could not be stopped after the warm up in the first game. The team tallied 18 hits and 18 runs to seal the win over the Thunderwolves. Across the board the team was hitting well, which made it near impossible to stop them.

The first two runs came after singled and was followed by Kacie Burger walking. Carly Perry then hit a 2 RBI double to bring them both home. CSU Pueblo responded in the bottom of the inning with 3 runs to take their only lead of the game. Colorado Christian did not let them have it for long after scoring 3 runs of their own in the third. Kendall Yasui singled, then Stephanie Day was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced after a wild pitch, and were both brought home after a double from Kacie Burger. Charlotte Romero then singled to bring home Burger for the final run of the inning.

In the fourth inning the team scored a single run after yet another double from Carly Perry, who was advanced on a fly out, and made it home on a single from Kendall Yasui. The fifth inning the Cougars scored yet again, this time tallying two more. Kacie Burger was hit by the pitch, then made it home after a double from Charlotte Romero. Shelby Fusich then followed with another double to bring Romero home. In the fifth inning Burger was the first to score yet again, after starting out the inning with a walk. Charlotte Romero hit a single to advance her to second, and Burger then advanced to third after Shelby Fusich was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Perry hit a single to bring home Burger to put them up by 6, 9-3.

Doubling their score in the final inning of play, Colorado Christian rallied to score 9 runs in the seventh to finish the day with a bang. The streak of runs started and ended the same way, with a homerun from Piper Lujan. Lujan started off the inning strong with her first homerun, and was followed up well by the rest of the lineup. Kendall Yasui then singled, and was followed by a double from Stephanie Day. Caitlin McCarthy was then walked to load the bases for Kacie Burger. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Burger hit the first grand slam of the season to put the Cougars up by 11. Megan Gordon was then walked, and brought home after another Shelby Fusich double. Carly Perry followed with a single to bring home Fusich, and was brought home by the second homerun of the inning from Piper Lujan.

Kenzie Mattey earned her thirteenth win of the year after notching 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. The pair of wins gives the Cougars an overall record of 23-8 and an RMAC record of 16-2.

UP NEXT: Colorado Christian will face the Thunderwolves again tomorrow, April 1st, at 2pm and 4pm to close out the series.
