First Series Sweep

After hosting Fort Lewis at MSU Denver yesterday, the two teams met again today at UCCS. Closing out their weekend series, Colorado Christian sealed the sweep against the Skyhawks after finishing out their double header today.

GAME 1: W 8-0

Starting off the day strong the Cougars started out their first game of the day slow, but after a strong fifth inning they took the win with a run rule.

The first two runs for Colorado Christian came in the first inning after a string of singles got them going. The four singles got started with Hanna Farmer, then Stephanie Day, Charlotte Romero, and was closed out with Shelby Fusich. The Cougars then had the lead of 2-0 for the next few innings.

Coming alive in the fifth, CCU raked in 5 runs. Kendall Yasui got the team going after a single, and was advanced to second after Stephanie Day walked. Charlotte Romero then followed with another single but was advanced on an error that also brought home Yasui. Kacie Burger then hit a sac fly to bring home Day for their second run of the inning. Megan Gordon came in to pinch run for Romero, and was brought home after Shelby Fusich reached on a fielders choice and Gordon stole home. Jamie Romero was then walked, and was followed up by a double from Caitlin McCarthy to bring both Fusich and Romero home and close out the inning.

To close out the game with the run rule, the Cougars scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth after Hanna Farmer walked, stole second, advanced to third after a single from Yasui, and was brought home on a sac fly from Day.

Kenzie Mattey pitched the entire game to earn her eighth win of the year, only allowing four hits and notching four strike outs.

GAME 2: W 11-5

The second game of the day was not as easy of a win for the Cougars. The Skyhawks were the first ones on the board with a big second inning in which they scored 5 runs. Colorado Christian responded with a single run in the second after Carly Perry singled, then was brought home by a double from Jamie Romero. The Cougars did not let Fort Lewis keep their lead for long, and tied the game up after scoring 4 more runs in the bottom of the third. It got going after Charlotte Romero reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second after Caitlin McCarthy walked. Romero was then brought home after Shelby Fusich singled to get their first run of the inning. Burger then doubled to bring home McCarthy, and was followed by another single from Perry that brought home Fusich and Burger to tie up the game.

The next inning the Cougars took the lead after Kendall Yasui walked, stole second, advanced to third after a Day single, and scored after Charlotte Romero hit into a double play. Colorado Christian was not up 6-5 and did not give the lead back. They had another big inning in the fifth after scoring another 4 runs despite starting the inning with 2 outs. Jamie Romero walked and then stole second, and was followed by Hanna Farmer doing the same thing to put runners on second and third. Making it three in a row, Yasui then singled and stole second as well – bringing home Romero in the process. Closing out the inning with a bang, Stephanie Day hit a homerun to put the Cougars up 10-5. Scoring another single run in the bottom of the sixth, Kacie Burger hit a homerun of her own to close out the game with a 6 run win.

Kenzie Mattey took her third win of the weekend after dominating on the mound to give her 9 wins total. She closed out the series with 3 wins, a save, 11 strikeouts, and zero earned runs in 11.1 innings pitched.
