CCU baseball was back at in Golden on Friday night under the lights at Jim Darden field, looking to avenge a 6-20 loss from the previous day. The Cougars
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Unlike yesterday's game that saw scoring early and often, today's matchup was scoreless through two innings. The Cougars started the top of the 3rd inning with
Joel Manzano singling through the right side, and advancing to second on a Matthew Kimura sacrifice bunt.
Frankie Shearn III also laid down a bunt, but was fast enough to make it to fist safely, moving Manzano to third. Shearn would steal second, but it would just give him a shorter jog home as
Tommy Orr sent his second homerun of the series over the fence, plating three runs for the visiting Cougars.
Â
The Orediggers would record a hit in three of the next four bottom innings, but would never threaten until the bottom of the 7th inning. Starting pitcher
Alex Ginn went 7 and 1/3 innings, holding Colorado School of Mines to just six hits on the night, recording four strikeouts and allowing just 1 earned run.
Kyler Riordan replaced Ginn in the 8th inning with runners at second and third with one out, holding them to just one run on a sac fly.
Â
CCU would take that run back in the top of the 9th inning as
Sam Gallegos sent another ball over the wall, this time to over dead center field. Riordan would stay in to close the game out, and though the Orediggers laced a leadoff double to begin the frame, Riordan would go on to strike out one, and force a pair of ground outs to earn his second save of the season.
Â
WHAT IS NEXT:
Â
With the two nine inning games split, the Cougars and Orediggers will meet for a pair of seven inning games in tomorrow's doubleheader finale. Game one is set to have a 1:00 pm first pitch.
