CCU baseball closed out their series against the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines with a Saturday doubleheader in Golden. The home team took both games, holding the Cougars to just one run in each game. After the weekend series, the Cougars fall to 12-29 overall and just 7-21 in RMAC competition.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Game One: CCU 1 – CSM 4
Â
The first game in the doubleheader saw CCU out-hit the Orediggers 10-6, but Mines made theirs count as three of their six hits were solo shots over the fence, accounting for all but one of their runs. The Cougars lone run came in their final offensive frame in the top of the 7th inning when
Wyatt Crenshaw pinch hit with the bases loaded and sent a single into center field.
Hunter Hays would score easily from third, but
Tommy Orr would not be so lucky from second, getting thrown out at home plate for the second out of the inning.
Â
Game Two: CCU 1 – CSM 9
Â
The series finale saw the Orediggers pile it on throughout, launching another four homers spread out over the first four innings, ultimately giving them a 0-9 lead.
Carter Mossey would score the only run for CCU in the game in the top of the 6th inning with heads up baserunning, taking advantage of a wild pitch that got away from the CSM catcher.
Â
Tommy Orr and
Sam Gallegos were the offensive leaders for the Cougars this weekend. Orr had a season best series going 7-13 at the plate, two of which were home runs, with three runs scored and five RBI's, while Gallegos tallied just two official hits, both were home runs, but scored three runs and three RBI's as well.
Â
WHAT IS NEXT:
Â
No reprieve from top notch competition for the Cougars as they travel to St. George, Utah, next weekend to take on a Dixie State team the scored 33 total runs in four games against Regis this weekend. Game one is scheduled for a 6:00 pm first pitch on Friday the 26th.
