Senior Day Split

After celebrating their six incredible seniors and all they have done for the softball program and for Colorado Christian, the Cougars finished out their regular season with a split.  The senior class featuring Kenzie Mattey, Shelby Fusich, Hanna Farmer, Kendall Yasui, Carly Perry, and Charlotte Romero is one that will go down as one of the best classes in Colorado Christian softball history. They set numerous school records as well as RMAC records, and competed at the NCAA tournament.

GAME 1 VS NMHU: W 10-0

Senior pitcher Kenzie Mattey started off the game on the right foot by tallying 2 strikeouts in the first inning. Her team followed her lead and scored 3 in the bottom of the inning to get a quick jump on the Cowgirls. Hanna Farmer started off the inning with a double, stole third, then made it home after a single from Kendall Yasui. Following up with two more singles to make it three in a row to load the bases was Stephanie Day and Charlotte Romero. The next run came as all the runners advanced on a wild pitch, and the final one came from a sac fly from Caitlin McCarthy.

For the second inning in a row, Kenzie Mattey then struck out two more to go three up three down in the top of the second. Kendall Yasui also kept the déjà vu trend alive by scoring on a wild pitch for the second inning in a row. She singled up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out, and then made it home on a wild pitch for the only run of the inning.

Scoring the first run of the next inning was Carly Perry kicking it off with a homerun. The next few runs came after the bases were loaded for Stephanie Day after Hanna Farmer reached on a fielder's choice, Megan Gordon walked, and Kendall Yasui hit a single. Day then landed a 3 RBI double to put Colorado Christian up by 8.

With an 8 run cushion, the Cougars needed to keep their lead in order to win the game with the run-rule. Giving themselves some more room the team tallied two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to ease the pressure. Kacie Burger got the inning going with a double, and then advanced to third on a fly out. Shelby Fusich was then hit by the pitch in her normal fashion to reach first. Piper Lujan then brought both runners home with a single to close out the game with a final score of 10-0 in just five innings.

Kenzie Mattey took her 17th win on the mound after pitching the entire game and tallying 5 strikeouts, while only allowing 2 hits.

GAME 2 VS CMU: L 3-5

The next game was more of a fight for the Cougars as they were already secure in their second place finish in the RMAC, and the Mavericks were not a team that was likely to let up.

The first couple of innings from both teams were marked with good defense – both playing a clean game. Mesa was the first to score after landing a single run in the top of the third. But Colorado Christian responded and took the lead in the bottom of the inning after scoring 3. Stephanie Day landed a homerun at the end of the inning which gave the Cougars the advantage – bringing home Shelby Fusich who singled and Hanna Farmer who reached on a fielder's choice.

After a quick fourth inning, Mesa tied up the game in the fifth after scoring two runs off of a homerun of their own. The Mavericks then tightened up their game and scored one run per inning left to win 5-3, holding the Cougars to three batters in both the sixth and seventh.

Kenzie Mattey took the loss on the mound after coming in for the remaining 2.2 innings, giving her just her 6th loss of the season.

UP NEXT: The senior day split gives Colorado Christian a regular season overall record of 35-14, and an RMAC record of 28-8. Finishing second in conference, the Cougars will travel to Grand Junction for the RMAC tournament beginning on Thursday, May 2nd, as they play the Regis Rangers at 10:45am.
