Strong First Half Lifts Cougars to Win

LAKEWOOD, CO – In the first game of the season the Cougars held off a late flurry of goals from St. Mary's to secure the win 3-2.

Colorado Christian got off to the first 1-0 start since the 2016 season which was the season they won the NCCAA National Championship.  

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars scored first with a 13th minute goal on a beautiful shot from just in the middle of box to the left side of the net by Brooke-lyn Schultz quickly followed up by a 21st minute goal on a tap in from the left side of the box to the bottom left corner of the net from Sarah Butler.

Coming out of the half with a 2-0 lead Colorado Christian scored again in the 50th minute on a rocket from outside the box to the bottom left of the net again from Schultz. The two goals today were the first of Schultz's collegiate career.

St. Mary's did not give up though as they scored twice in the second half, first on a 67th minute penalty kick from Serena Frank. The second goal followed in the 78th minute by Olivia Bachelet to bring the Rattlers' within one goal.

The game ended with a St. Mary's free kick from just outside the box that led to a header from Megan Copeland that sailed just over the crossbar in the closing seconds.

COUGAR LEADERS: Schultz led the team with five shots, three of those being on goal. Butler, Dakoda Martinez, and Amanda Lopez all had one shot on goal.

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  •           The Cougars outshot the Rattlers' 6-1 in the first half but the Rattlers' outshot the Cougars 6-5 in the second frame.
  •           Ashleigh Maguire and Ireland VanDyke split time in goal with Maguire getting the start and saving the only shot she saw. VanDyke started the second half and saved one shot.
  •           The Rattlers' saw two players on the pitch for all 90' while the Cougars had none.

QUOTEABLE: Head Coach Tammy McPherson after the game, "We're excited about the win, but want to learn being in a game like this how to maintain our composure and stay steady and play smart."

UP NEXT: The Cougars will head to Florida on a three-game road trip to play Florida Tech, Eckerd College, and Rollins College. The five-day swing starts Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Florida Tech. Colorado Christian will return home to kick of RMAC play against Colorado Mesa on Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at Trailblazer Stadium.
