Ninth Inning Setback

COSTA MESA, CA – Needing one out to start a four-game swing through southern California with a victory, heartbreak happened.

Bethesda scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to register a 6-5 walk-off win against the Cougars on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Despite giving up the game's first run, Colorado Christian took a 3-1 lead in the third frame when Zayne Willems hit a two-run home run then Michael Spain followed with a solo shot. Bethesda got one-run back in the sixth inning when a hit-by-pitch with two-outs and the base loaded forced-in a run.

Colorado Christian increased their lead to 5-2 in the seventh stanza as Tommy Orr crossed the plate for an unearned run then Blake Mattey hit an RBI single.

The Flames plated two runs of their own in their half of the inning on a two-run single by Bobby Doerr. In the ninth inning two of their first three runners reach base but Jarrod Rivera induced a groundout to get the Cougars within one-out of the victory. However, Colorado Christian made a pair of errors on ground balls which allowed the tying and winning runs.

COUGAR LEADERS: Orr and Mattey each had a team high three hits while Kyler Riordon banged out a pair of base knocks. Willems scored twice and drove-in two as well.
