SANTA BARBARA – Embracing the grind of traveling hundreds of miles through southern California to play four games in four days, the Cougars enjoyed day two's trip.
Despite losing the lead in the ladder stages, Colorado Christian rallied for an efficiently played 4-3 victory against Westmont in 11 innings on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado Christian scored the first two runs of the game. In the second inning Connor Marschall hit a ball to shortstop with Blake Mattey and Michael Spain on base. An error by the shortstop allowed Marschall to reach base and allow Spain to scored the first run of the contest. In the fourth inning, Zayne Willems cracked his fourth homerun of the season to open the stanza.
The Cougars continued to hold their two-run lead until the sixth inning when they home team took they lead. Devin Perez tied the scored with one swing of his bat. The junior's two-run shot with no out gave the Warriors life. Simon Reid's base knock two hitters later gave Westmont a 3-2 lead after six innings.
Colorado Christian knotted the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning when Michael Spain two-out RBI single to centerfield scored Matt Kimura. Westmont put together a threat in the ninth inning with runners on first and second with one out but JC Watne worked out of the jam with no harm.
In the 11th inning, with two outs, Marschall singled to left field and when Spain crossed the plate the Cougars had their go-ahead run. In their half of the frame, Westmont put runners on first and second with two outs but a groundout ended the contest.
COUGAR LEADERS: Spain had a team best three hits in his five trips to the plate. Kimura (2-for-4) and Mattey each had a double while Marschall had a pair of RBI
On the bump, Justin Kiedinger went six innings and struck out six in a no-decision effort. JC Watne earned the win by allowing just one hit and striking out two in four innings of work after Kiedinger. Jarrod Rivera worked the final inning for his second save of the season.
