ESCONDIDO, CA – Three significant scoring innings was all it took.
Despite holding an early lead, Colorado Christian let their edge slip away as Saint Katherine's posted a 14-8 win on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Scoring was not at a premium as multiple runs were scored in six of the game's innings.
The Cougars held a 2-1 lead after the second inning but the Saint Katherine's offense started to get warm. Colorado Christian up their lead to 3-1 after their half of the third inning but the Firebirds tied the contest in the bottom half of their frame.
Colorado Christian took their final lead of the contest as they scored a single run in the fourth inning. Saint Katherine's put a five-spot on the scoreboard and never trailed again after the stanza.
Neither team crossed the plate in the fifth inning but the offense picked-up against in the sixth. Trailing 8-4, the Cougars got a run back in the sixth inning but the Firebirds spread their lead to 11-5 after putting up three run in their sixth inning effort.
With a two-run seventh frame then another run in the eighth, the Cougars were down 11-8 and had a chance during their final at-bats in the ninth. However, before they could chip away at a hopefully three-run deficit, Saint Katherine's scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to round out the scoring in the contest.
COUGAR LEADERS: Mattey had his first four-hit day with the Cougars as the outfielder went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Zayne Willems went 3-for-5 and crossed the plate twice. Both transfers have at least one-hit in each of the team's seven games this season.
