GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Colorado Christian, back on the road, against one of the best teams in the RMAC, this time facing off against Colorado Mesa for the second time.
A strong first half put the Cougars in an ideal position to steal a game on the road and reestablish themselves in the tournament conversation. A flame that burned too quickly, Colorado Christian cooled off in the second half and Colorado Mesa pulled away, winning 50-39.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Cougars doubled the Mavericks score in the first quarter, scoring 10 points and holding Colorado Mesa to just five. The Cougars were carried by an 8-0 run to end the quarter.
A strong first quarter propelled the Cougars into a 12 point second quarter as well, only allowing the Mavericks to tie with seven minutes to go before half. The rest of the quarter was back and forth with no team leading by more than three but the Cougars took a one point lead into half.
Coming out of halftime it was apparent the momentum had shifted, Colorado Mesa scored 16 points and held the Cougars to only nine including scoring the first seven points of the second half.
The fourth was more of the same, Colorado Mesa scoring 13 and Colorado Christian only putting up eight. The Mavericks pulled away in the quarter as they never led by less than nine and cruised to a 50-39 win.
COUGAR LEADERS: Lourdes Gonzales and Brookelyn Hurlbut led the team with 10 points apiece. Gonzalez and Taylor Ferris both had seven rebounds. Hurlbut and Gonzalez both had two assists.
