Cougars Fall to Mavericks

LAKEWOOD, CO – The first game of weekend for the Cougars was a defensive battle between Colorado Christian and Colorado Mesa, with the Mavericks coming out on top, 67-39.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams came out slow in the first quarter on offense, with Colorado Mesa scoring 11 in the first and the Cougars scoring seven. The Mavericks started the game on a 6-0 run but the Cougars scored 7 of the next 12 points.

In the second half the two teams stayed close as the Cougars kept the deficit in the single digits up until the end of the half.

The third quarter was when the Cougars started to get a bit of traction on offense. The Mavericks also found their footing in the third as well and rained down shots to put up 28 points in the quarter and extend the lead to 27 heading in to the fourth.

The Cougars trailed by 20 or more points for the entire fourth as the Mavericks rode their hot third quarter shooting performance to a win.

COUGAR LEADERS: Brookelyn Hurlbut once against led the team with 10 points. Christen Curry was second with eight. Hurlubt led in rebounds as well with seven for the team. Sam Nunez had three assists.

FROM THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Cougars coming off the bench scored 14 points
  • Colorado Christian scored 14 points off turnovers as well
  • The Cougars had seven steals including three from Nunez which ties the season high

UP NEXT: Colorado Christian is back on the court tomorrow afternoon as they host the Westminster Griffins at the CCU Event Center at 3 p.m.
