LAKEWOOD, CO – Getting a point against a nationally ranked team completed a season that nearly resulted in an NCAA postseason berth for the first time in program history.
An early second half goal made the difference as the Colorado Christian men's soccer team tied No. 12 Colorado Mesa 1-1 on an overcast and chilly Sunday afternoon at Trailblazer Stadium.
The deadlocked game ends an historic season for Colorado Christian. The 10-win campaign is a first for the program. With other results around the RMAC on the last day of the regular season, the Cougars were pushed out of that playoff berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Tobi Osifodunrin scored the game's first goal in the 32nd minute. The freshman took a long ball from Grant Roloff and outraced the Maverick defenders to ball. His right footed shot from far side slipped past the goalie and off the left sidebar then tickled the net's twine.
Colorado Mesa found the equalizer early in the second half. Just over a minute into period, Ethan Anderson found the back of the net when his boot from the left side of the field snuck inside the near side post from 20 yards. Alec Fronapfel assisted on the play.
As the remainder of the game unfolded each team put shots towards the frame but a vast majority of shots went high and/or wide of the goal mouth. There were just six total shots on frame in the contest.
With the tie, the Cougars earned a point against a nationally ranked team for the first time since September of the 2013 season when they beat then-No. 9 Colorado School of Mines.
