GRAND JUNCTION, CO – After nearly pulling off an upset of Colorado Mesa in their lone regular season match-up, the Colorado Christian volleyball team had hopes of completing the job in their RMAC Tournament contest. Unfortunately, it didn't come to pass.
The Mavericks broke open a tight contest in the final two sets to record a 3-1 victory (25-17, 17-25, 25-16, 25-18) in an RMAC postseason quarterfinal contest.
With the setback, the Cougars ends their season with an 11-16 record while the Mavericks move onto the semifinals against Colorado School of Mines on Friday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED: In the opening set the home team used a strong offensive attack as they methodically pulled ahead. In the opening set, the Mavericks pieced together a .355 hitting percentage while Colorado Christian recorded a .087 hitting mark.
The start of the second frame belong to the Cougars as they scored seven of the first nine points. However, Colorado Mesa responded by going up 11-9 which forced a Colorado Christian timeout. Even though their deficit got to 12-9, the Cougars rallied back to take a 15-13 edge as the three-seed called their first timeout. The momentum for Colorado Christian didn't stop as they grew their lead to eight points (23-15) en route to tying the match at one set apiece.
Unfortunately, Colorado Christian couldn't continue their momentum as they third frame unfolded. Colorado Mesa built a lead in the set and never relented as they notched a .407 hitting percentage in grabbing the lead in the contest.
The Mavericks relentless offensive effort continued into the fourth stanza. They build a 13-6 edge as they converted half of their 14 attack attempts into kills. Colorado Christian couldn't get their deficit under five points down the stretch.
COUGAR LEADERS: Libby Goodman took a match high 34 swings as she recorded a team best 10 kills. Breanna Allen chipped-in a six-kill effort while Kristy Dick and Lilly Woods contributed five kills each.
Madelyn Long registered 12 digs along the back line as Izzy Jones directed the offense with 26 assists.
