Black Hills State Rides Strong Shooting Effort to Win

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The shooting display that Black Hills State had on Sunday evening was impressive by any standards.

The Yellow Jackets had the second-best shooting effort by any RMAC team this season as they posted a 91-63 victory against Colorado Christian.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Each offense started strong. Unfortunately for the Cougars the Black Hills State offense wasn't missing much.

Strong shooting aided in the Yellow Jackets building a 37-22 lead with just under seven minutes left until halftime. The home team hit 14 of their 21 field goals attempts, including a 6-for-9 effort from behind the arc, in building their double figure edge.

They kept that double figure lead, going into the locker room with a 49-36 edge. Colorado Christian registered a solid 50 percent (15-for-30) shooting percentage but the Yellow Jackets missed just 10 of their 28 attempts (64.3 percent).

Black Hills State continued their strong shooting in the second half. They hit two-thirds of their first 18 shots in the second half as they held a 77-49 with under 10 minutes left in the contest. The Cougars shooting hovered at 40 percent as the home team built their advantage.

When the final horn sounded the Yellow Jackets went 36-for-57 from the floor. That 63.2 percent accuracy was second highest mark this season by a conference team. Only No. 1 Colorado School of Mines had a better single game effort when they made 63.6 percent of their shots in late November against MSU Denver.

COUGAR LEADERS: Andy Stafford scored 20-plus points for the second straight game as the sophomore registered a 22-point performance in 32 minutes. Ross Williams added 16 points while DJ McDonald tallied 12 points.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Black Hills State made 18 field goals in each half
  • The home team shot better from the floor than the foul line (56.3 percent)
  • The Yellow Jackets held an 18-4 points off turnover scoring edge

UP NEXT: The Cougars continue their road swing with a Thursday contest at UCCS. Tip-off in Colorado Springs is currently slated for 7:30 p.m.
