Offense Comes Alive as Cougars Roll Fort Lewis

 DURANGO, CO – The Cougars came alive on offense in the final two games of the weekend series against Fort Lewis, winning both games against the Sky Hawks. Game One finished in five innings with the Cougars winning 9-1. Game two went all seven innings but the Cougars were still victorious 11-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: The Cougars came out swinging in the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning as the Cougars had a two RBI double and a home run to open the game.

In the fourth the Cougars added three more runs with another home run, a single and a sac fly as the Cougars went up 7-0 over the Sky Hawks. The power continued in the fifth inning for the Cougars, as Kenzie Middleton hit her second home run of the game, and Kaelin Morkisch recorded her first RBI with the Cougars to increase the Cougars lead to nine runs.

Fort Lewis got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a fielder's choice RBI but the one run was not enough to continue the game as the Cougars won in five innings with the 8 run mercy rule after five innings.

COUGAR LEADERS: Kenzie Middleton paced the Cougars with three RBI including two home runs. Kayla Middleton also had a home run and Piper Lujan had two RBI.

Jennifer Romero pitched all five innings and recorded her second win of the season allowing only one run and striking out one.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Kenzie and Kayla Middleton both hit their first collegiate home runs.
  • Kaelin Morkisch got her first start of the season.
  • This is the first time the Cougars have ended a game with a mercy rule this season.

GAME TWO: The second game of the day, both teams stayed quite during the start, with neither team scoring in the first two innings of the game. Fort Lewis struck first with a solo home run to left center.

Cougars came back in the fifth inning, with a double and a Fort Lewis error put the Cougars up 3-1. Fort Lewis responded with power in the bottom of the fifth, as a three run home run put the Sky Hawks back up 4-3.

It was all Colorado Christian after that though, the Cougars scored four runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a Piper Lujan home run to retake the leads for the Cougars for good.

Colorado Christian piled it on in the second, with back to back singles to score two more runs and the Lujan drove in her third and fourth runs of the game with a RBI single.

COUGAR LEADERS: Sydney Reamer had four hits and scored three runs. Piper Lujan had two hits and four RBI. Stephanie Day had her best game of the season so far with two hits and three RBI.

Julie Katz started the game for the Cougars in the circle and pitched 4.1 innings with one strikeout and three earned runs. Samaria Roope finished the game out and recorded the win with 2.2 innings pitched only allowing one run and striking out one.

  • The Cougars got back to .500 with the second win over Fort Lewis

UP NEXT: The Cougars are home next weekend for the first time this year as they will take on MSU Denver on Sunday and Monday with double headers on both days.
