Five Setter Goes to UCCS

LAKEWOOD, CO – Momentum really didn't have a lot of major swings throughout Wednesday's RMAC volleyball match between UCCS and Colorado Christian. The early leader in each set was able to move forward successfully in that set. Until the next run for 25 points began.

The Mountain Lions won all the odd numbered sets en route to a 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-14, 8-25, 15-10) victory against Colorado Christian.

The setback snapped the Cougars two-match wining streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Usually a five-set match can feel like a marathon but this one was more in the half marathon time range as the contest was concluded in less than two hours. There were only nine lead changes throughout the contest.

A fairly tight opening set, which had 10 ties and five lead changes, went to the Mountain Lions in part due to their .267 hitting mark. They had just three errors on their 30 attempts. The big swing in the frame came late. Colorado Christian held an 18-17 lead after a Breanna Allen kill. However, the Mountain Lions closed the stanza on an 8-3 scoring spurt.

The Cougars raced out to an 11-3 edge in the second set. UCCS closed their deficit to two points on three occasions but never closer. The visitors turned the tide in the third set as they jumped out to a big lead in nabbing the lead in the match.

As the fourth set unfolded, Colorado Christian flipped the script as they got their large lead early and were never threaten as the match came down to the pivotal fifth set. The frame was tied a handful of times early but the big flip came just after the midway point. Tied at 9-9, UCCS scored five straight points before winning the contest on their second match point.

COUGAR LEADERS: Jacey Johnson had a match high 14 kills with a .385 hitting percentage while Allen notched a 10-kill effort. Jasa Scheierman added eight kills and four service aces with five blocks.

Christa Tucker had a season best 19 digs while Maddie Burns registered 34 assists.
