Five Set Thrillers
The last two matches for the Cougars have gone the distance with the Cougars splitting the wins. On Wednesday, March 10 they won the even numbered sets vs. UCCS before falling in a quickly played five set match that took less than two hours. Friday's five setter against Western Colorado, the Cougars fell behind 0-2 before rallying for an exciting victory.
Gaining Some Momentum
Despite a rough start to the season, the Cougars have come on of late by winning three of their last four matches. Colorado Christian has won 11 of the last 18 sets they have played.
Johnson Enjoying the Rightside
Over the last few matches senior
Jacey Johnson has been the Cougars go-to player on offense. She has three straight matches with at least 10 kills; with a season high 20 against Western Colorado. Moreover she has hit at least .341 in each of those three matches. She was named the RMAC Player of the Week for her efforts in those two matches.
Checking In on the Newcomers
A handful of newcomers have begun to assert themselves well to the NCAA Division game.
Junior Transfer
Breanna Allen leads the team with a 2.89 kills per set average while playing in 27 of the team's 41 sets. Freshmen
Alli Douglass (2.82) and
Kylar Raymond (2.13) ranked second and fourth respectively in kills per set on the squad.
Megan Piton has taken on more responsibilities along the back lines as the newcomer is second on the team with 65 digs. She has started at the libero position in two of the last five matches.
In the Conference Stats ...
For a team perspective the Cougars are in seventh among league schools in attack percentage (.175) with their 11.86 kills per set average ranking them sixth. At the service line they fourth in the league in service aces per set - 1.70.
Maddie Burns continues to rank third in the conference in assists (9.41 assist/set). Offensively the duo of
Breanna Allen and
Alli Douglass kills per set average is eighth and ninth among all RMAC players.
Christa Tucker is serving up 0.41 aces per set which ranks ninth in the conference.
Head Coach - Bobby Blanken
The 2020 season will be
Bobby Blanken's fourth as Colorado Christian's Head Volleyball Coach. In his first year, Coach Blanken led the team to a conference record of 14-4 which landed a 4th place conference finish which allowed the program to host a RMAC Tournament match for the first time.
During his three seasons with the Cougars he has coached six all-conference players as well as an all-region and All-American player in Sophia Proano.
Before Colorado Christian, Blanken served MSU Denver's head assistant coach since 2014. In his three-year stint at MSU Denver, Blanken helped lead a very successful program that went 18-0 in the RMAC in 2016.
Prior to coaching at MSU Denver, Blanken was the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, CA from 2010-2014. During his time at The Master's College, Blanken successfully built the program from a 7-22 first year record to a No. 6 NAIA finish in his final year. Blanken was named the 2012 AVCA West Region Coach of the Year and 2012 Golden State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. At The Master's College, Blanken totaled a record of 87-56 (.608).
