Piper's Power Leads Cougars Over CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, CO – The Cougars traveled south to CSU Pueblo for a four game series against the ThunderWolves. The Cougars never trailed as they handled CSU Pueblo in both games, game one ending 15-2 and game two ending 9-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders on offense, scoring eight runs in the second inning as they blew the game wide open, the scoring was highlighted by Piper Lujan hitting a three RBI triple to put the Cougars up by eight.

CSU Pueblo responded in the bottom of the third with two runs but it was all they were able to muster against the Cougars pitching staff.

The Cougars continued to pile on in the top of the fourth with a Lujan two run home run along with a Sydney Reamer two RBI single increased the lead even more for the Cougars.

In the fifth inning the Cougars added on with two more runs before the game was called at the bottom of the fifth for mercy rule.

COUGAR LEADERS: Kenzie Middleton and Piper Lujan both had three hits for the Cougars, Lujan had five RBI, Caitlin McCarthy had two doubles.

In the circle Jennifer Romero threw all five innings, with six strikeouts and only allowing four hits.

GAME TWO: The Cougars once again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning, the ThunderWolves responded in the bottom of the second with a single run but that was as close as they would get to taking the lead.

The Cougars scored five runs in the third innings highlighted by a Kaelin Morkisch three run triple to cement the Cougars lead.

CSU Pueblo scored four unanswered runs to keep it close but the Cougars scored two insurance runs in the seventh to hold on to win game number two.

COUGAR LEADERS: The bottom third of the lineup carried for the Cougars as Caitlin McCarthy, Kayla Middleton and Kaelin Morkisch had two hits each, and drove in five of the eight Cougars runs.

In the circle, Julie Katz threw 5.2 innings with six strikeouts, Sydney Rawlings finished up the game for the Cougars with 1.1 innings pitched.
