Cougars Split Series with Orediggers

GOLDEN, CO – Day two in Golden ended very similar to the way day one ended as they Cougars lost game one on a heartbreaking walk off and then the offense showed out in game two as the Cougars won by a handful of runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: The Orediggers got on the board first with a run in the first inning. The Cougars responded in the third with three runs playing small ball with sacrifice hits and singles to take a 3-1 lead.

That was all for the Cougars though as they couldn't get the clutch hit to put away the Orediggers as they clawed back into the game, tying it in the fifth and then walking off in the seventh with a walk off home run.

COUGAR LEADERS: Kayla Middleton and Caitlin McCarthy both had two hits. Stephanie Day, Kenzie Middleton and Piper Lujan all drove in a run.

In the circle Jennifer Romero pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts. Samaria Roope threw 2.0 innings in relief while only allowing one hit.

GAME TWO: The Orediggers got out to another early lead in game two with a three run home run in the second inning. The Cougars responded in the top of the third with four runs capped off by an RBI double.

The Orediggers retook the lead in the fourth inning with multiple extra base hits as well as a safety squeeze to drive in a run. The Cougars bounced back in the top of the fourth with three RBI doubles and an error by the Orediggers as the Cougars took a lead they would not relinquish going up 10-7.

The cherry on top of the offensive showcase was Stephanie Day hitting her first home run of the season in the fifth and Piper Lujan hitting a home run in which she swung with basically one hand to take it out.

COUGAR LEADERS: Day, Lujan, and Sydney Reamer all had three hits. Day had four RBI while Roope had three RBI.

In the circle, Julie Katz started the game and pitched two innings with one strikeout. Sydney Rawlings pitch 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and only allowed two runs.
