GRAND JUNCTION, CO – Looking for improved times and solid competition, the Colorado Christian track and field program competed in the recently organized CMU Maverick Sun Open.
Competing against the host Mavericks and Western Colorado, the Cougars put together a handful of top efforts in their respective events while posting another NCAA provision mark.
MEN'S RECAP
Sprints
Tyler Bradley nearly re-set his school record in the 100 meter dash that he set last week on the same track. He ran a 10.75 which was just .02 off his record mark. He proceeded to run a 21.91 during his 200 meter effort for his second top five effort of the day.
Jacob Vermillion placed second in the 800 meter race as he posted the fastest time of the season by registering a 1:56.90. Tanner James also placed in the top five with a time of 1:58.86.
Distance
With seven Colorado Christian runners competing in the event, Alex Vance posted the second best time among collegiate runners as he posted an NCAA provisional time of 14:46.57; a 32-second improvement from his time last week. Isaac Russo had a top five finish with a time of 15:03.01
Field Events
Jaxon Hinch continues to be on the cusp of a provisional qualifying mark. On Sunday he topped out at 2.01 meters (6 feet, 8 inches) to tie for the top mark of the afternoon.
WOMEN'S RECAP
Sprints
Hannah George enjoyed the track on the western slope for the second straight week. Her time of 12.56 in the 100 meter dash was .02 off the school record and gave her a top five finish in the 11-runner field. During the 200 meter race, she fell just two-tenths of a second from her school mark as she crossed the finish line in 25.92.
Rachel Lucas lowered her season, and personal, best time in the 400 meter race she finished in 1:01.04.
Benisa Ellis put up a personal best time of 2:21.57 for a fourth place finish in the 800 meter event.
Distance
The 1500 meter race belong to the Cougars as they took the top three spots in the event. Michelle Kuipers won the race with a time of 4:38.59 with Shannon King (4:39.46) taking second place as both race the fastest time of the season for the program. Tessa Hooper put together a personal best time of 4:43.86 in taking third place in the 13-person field.
The 5000 meter race was all Colorado Christian as they were the only competitors in the event. Paige Tack notched a time of 18:23.37 in registering the best time this season on the squad. Callie Ketner also went sub-19 minutes as she finished in 18:51.43.
Field Events
Winnie Spurlock top the five-meter mark for the first time in 2021 in the long jump. The Arkansas native tallied her best effort of 5.10 meters (16 feet, 8 inches) in her fourth jump.
UP NEXT: The Cougars are scheduled to travel to the RMAC Championships which begins in 12 days hosted by CSU Pueblo.
