Cougars Tame Grizzlies with Series Sweep

LAKEWOOD, CO – The Cougars finished the week with a perfect 6-0 record after sweeping MSU Denver earlier this week. The Cougars swept the Grizzlies in two fast paced games Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

GAME ONE: The first game of the day was all Cougars as they got out to an early lead, scoring nine runs in the first inning which was highlighted by a Sydney Reamer three run home run in her second at bat of the inning as the Adams State starter only lasted 1/3 of an inning allowing nine runs on seven hits.

The Cougars scored again in the third with a two run single from Stephanie Day and then once again in the fourth on a Reamer single to bring the score to 12-0.

Adams State could not get anything going as Jennifer Romero and Sydney Rawlings shut out a solid Adams State offense.

COUGAR LEADERS: Sami Edwards had three hits and scored three runs. Sydney Reamer scored three runs and drove in four RBI along with Stephanie Day who also drove in four.

Jennifer Romero started the game and pitched three innings allowing only one hit and recording the win. Sydney Rawlings pitched two innings in relief with two strikeouts and allowing three hits.

GAME TWO: The second game of the day was the closest game of the series as Adams State kept it close with the Cougars for the entirety of the game.

Piper Lujan got the Cougars on the board early with a single up the middle in the first inning but the Grizzlies responded in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to tie the game for the first time in the series.

Caitlin McCarthy drove in two in the bottom of the third with a single to center field. The Cougars scored twice more in the fourth with a single from Kaelin Morkisch who then scored on a throwing error by the Grizzlies in a play that looked straight out of Little League.

The Cougars scored again in the fifth on a passed ball but the Grizzlies responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to make it a 6-3 game. The Cougars were able to lock down on defense including a diving catch in right field from Kenzie Middleton that would have made Mookie Betts jealous.

COUGAR LEADERS: Piper Lujan had three hits for the Cougars, Kayla Middleton had two hits. Caitlin McCarthy had two RBI. Sami Edwards had two walks.

Julie Katz started the game for the Cougars and pitched three innings allowing one run and only giving up two hits. Samaria Roope pitched four innings in relief, recording the win and striking out one while allowing two runs.
